THON

THON is Penn State’s annual dance marathon. It is a year-long effort that raises funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. In 1973, a small group of dedicated Penn State students held the first Dance Marathon. That year, 39 dancer couples participated and raised $2,000. Since then, THON’s presence in the Penn State community has grown exponentially. THON now has 15,000 student volunteers, 700 dancers, and has raised more than $80 million, benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Last year alone Penn State raised a record total of $10,686,924.83 dollars for the kids. THON is regarded as the largest student run philanthropy in the world!!

Greek organizations play a vital role in the efforts to raise money. The brothers of Delta Sigma Iota strive to raise as much money possible. During the 2010-2011 school, we raised close to 13,000 dollars and will continue to surpass that mark in the future. Some fundraising examples include Canning, THONvelopes and Corporate donations. Not only do we raise the money, but the fraternity is blessed to be associated with a THON family. As a result of having a family and raising the money, a select few of the brothers are chosen to represent the fraternity and the THON family by dancing during THON weekend. These brothers are awake standing for 46 hours straight. THON is something that everyone at Penn State is a part of and we the brothers of Delta Sigma Iota will always put our best efforts in helping the cause to raise awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer.
